Copies of a VCD highlighting Umno's version on the Pantai Batu Buruk clash in Terengganu on Sept 8 are a 'hot item' at the Umno annual general meeting.

Entitled 'PAS is violent again!', the VCD was produced by the Terengganu government's communication unit (Ukom) - some 10,000 copies have been made for distribution to Umno delegates.

According to a worker stationed at the Ukom booth at the Putra World Trade Centre, where the five-day party meetings are being held, all the copies had been given out by yesterday.

The VCD was also played at the booth all day long, attracted the attention of a large number of passers-by.

The six-minute footage on the clash includes images allegedly showing opposition supporters throwing rocks at the police and burning the national flag during the ceramah (political talk) organised by polls reform group, Bersih.

The same clip had earlier been uploaded on free Internet website YouTube , classified as 'inappropriate' for those under 18 years of age.

The visuals are followed by a 40-minute briefing by Terengganu police chief Ayub Yaakob, at an undisclosed location. He tells a group about the incident .

Ayub, using a power-point presentation, explains why the police were forced to take action against the protestors. He accuses the organiser for failing to inform their supporters that it was an illegal gathering.

The clash will be remembered as the first time the police used 'live' bullets against a group of protestors, resulting in two individuals being shot.

Bersih has planned another mass rally, aimed at getting 10,000 people together for electoral reform, in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. The police have rejected its application for a permit and have warned of a crackdown if the rally proceeds.

'Azalina, the future'

Another hot item at the AGM is a book entitled 'Umno Successors', authored by Hatta Al-Mukmin.

Umno supreme council member and former Puteri Umno chief Azalina Othman Said's photo is featured prominently.

It comes in the wake of purported efforts to push Azalina up a notch in the party leadership, especially in the Wanita wing, during party election scheduled for next year.

"Azalina is the future, she can go as far as the prime minister. She is energetic, sharp, intelligent and she can dedicate her time fully to the party since she is single," explained Hatta, when met.

He said only two of the 2,000 copies of the book were left, as at yesterday.

Denying that the publication campaigns for Azalina's elevation, he said: "She is already 40 (and therefore not entitled to remain Puteri Umno head), it's only natural for her to move up."

Reprints of a book on the May 13 racial riot in 1960, authored by former premier Tunku Abdul Rahman ( photo ), were also on sale.

"You already know the truth, but let your children know the truth also," shouted the book seller, as part of the sales pitch.

Journalists were, however, hard-pressed to discover the truth about why the supply of mineral water to the media centre had dried up since yesterday.

The caterer's workers, when asked, said stocks had run out.

Perhaps it was pure coincidence after Umno Youth information chief Azimi Daim, in his debate on Wednesday, questioned why the bottled water served at the AGM had been produced by a non-bumiputera company.

The Taha brand (referring to Tabung Haji) was manufactured by Chuan Sin Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Spritzer Bhd.
