Cop under probe for inviting woman to check into hotel

A police officer may have landed himself in hot water after he was caught on camera allegedly inviting a woman to check into a hotel room with him.

The video clip, which has gone viral on social media, prompted the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters to launch criminal and disciplinary investigations against the personnel.

District police chief Azam Ismail said the officer has been reassigned pending the conclusion of the probe.

"The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which deals with offences of insulting the modesty of a person, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which stipulates offences related to improper use of network facilities," he said in a statement.

‘Only 10 minutes’ needed

Based on two clips uploaded on the victim's TikTok account, the incident allegedly happened near the Pandan Perdana police station early Saturday morning.

The officer, who was in his uniform, was heard asking the victim to "lepak" (hang out) at his house in Keramat before asking if she would rather they check into a hotel room instead.

He was also heard persuading the woman to follow him to a nearby location, saying he needed "only 10 minutes" of her time.

The victim, however, rejected his advances and told him they could meet later.

In the second TikTok video uploaded today, the woman said the incident happened at about 3am when she was getting her motorcycle that was parked near the police station.

She claimed the officer had approached her, and they started chatting about "ordinary" stuff before the officer started to press her to follow him to a staircase.

"He tried to pressure me into following him to the staircase multiple times. He even promised that he just wanted 10 minutes from me.

"This was when I decided to take my handphone to record the conversation.

"Even when I was talking to him, I was thinking about what I should do (to get out of the situation)," she said.

She shared that she did not want to entertain the police officer but was scared to run or make any move against him, as they were the only two people at the location.

‘Normal’ behaviour

The victim has since lodged a police report on the incident, but she expressed disappointment over the police’s reaction to her complaint.

While refusing to reveal which police station she lodged the report, she claimed an officer there had blamed her for the incident.

"(The police officer) said it was normal for a man to ask a woman to check in (at a hotel)," she said.

A member of the force, she claimed, also told her it was wrong for her to record the conversation as the police officer involved was on duty.
