Special Branch director is new IGP

Bukit Aman’s Special Branch director Khalid Ismail has been appointed as the new inspector-general of police.

In a statement today, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to Khalid’s appointment for a two-year term - beginning June 23, 2025, to June 22, 2027.

He is taking over from Razarudin Husain, whose two-year contract as the IGP expires this Sunday.

"Based on his extensive experience in police work, Khalid has the competency and leadership qualities to lead the Royal Malaysia Police.

"On behalf of the Madani government, I would like to express our utmost gratitude to Razarudin for all his contributions during his term as the IGP that began on June 23, 2023," Saifuddin said in a statement.

A duty handover ceremony was held at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre in Jalan Semarak at 3pm today to mark the transition of leadership.

According to Khalid's profile, he holds a Master's Degree in Comparative Laws from the International Islamic University Malaysia.

Born on April 8, 1965, Khalid began his career in the police force in 1987 as an officer in the intelligence division.

He rose through the ranks over the years and was appointed as the Special Branch director on April 10, 2023.

Khalid reached his mandatory retirement age on April 8 this year (2025) when his service was continued on a contract basis.
