Sinar Harian has suspended staff involved in the publication of an infographic which wrongly stated that newly appointed Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail was a PKR member.

In a statement today, the Malay daily said those suspended included the social media supervisor who approved the infographic published on Friday.

It had listed Khalid's "awards" as being a PKR central leadership committee member, Kedah PKR chairperson, and a former Sungai Petani Umno committee member.

Sinar Harian today confirmed that this was the result of recycling a graphic on Johari Abdul's profile when the latter was made Dewan Rakyat speaker.

However, it said it is still conducting an internal probe to determine if there were any elements of sabotage.

The Malay daily had also lodged a police report to inform the authorities on the matter and to allow the police room to investigate.

Media Council

Earlier today, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that the newly established Media Council was the best avenue to deal with matters such as erroneous infographics.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil

"We have just established the Media Council, but the structures have not been established yet.

"But for me, in a situation like this, the Media Council is the best platform for us to manage issues, including journalistic ethics as intended," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
