'No cover ups': MB to brief S'gor reps on Putra Heights fire

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari announced he would hold a special briefing session for all state lawmakers next Monday (July 7) to explain the final report about the Putra Heights fire.

This comes after various quarters criticised the report and claimed it lacked important details.

Amirudin said he decided this following a pre-council meeting with assemblypersons yesterday.

“The meeting on Monday will involve all Selangor MPs and assemblypersons, regardless of whether they are from the government or the opposition.

“Plus, I have also requested the state assembly speaker to give the government space to explain the matter in the upcoming assembly sitting,” he said on Facebook today.

Soil movement responsible, no sabotage

On Monday, the Occupational Safety and Health Department (Dosh) Petroleum Safety Division director Husdin Che Amat announced that the pipe involved was not fully supported by the soil around it due to cyclic loading, causing a weakness in the welded joint that broke apart and started the fire.

At the same press conference, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that no elements of sabotage or negligence were found, and the case has been classified as no further action.

Unimpressed, Selangor PAS chief Ab Halim Tamuri said the report was not comprehensive and relied heavily on an internal investigation committee, which raised more questions than answers.

However, Amirudin dismissed the claims and said the investigations were done thoroughly based on pipe and soil samples, in addition to studying water movements.

He also said that the state government is open to the possibility of further probes by independent parties.

“The state government is not hiding anything or planning to frame anyone.

“Our focus is on what to do next, to ensure such an incident never occurs again,” Amirudin added.
