Trump's polarising envoy to M'sia pick draws mounting pushback

Pushback continues to mount against US President Donald Trump's choice for the country's new 'alpha male' ambassador to Malaysia, Nick Adams, ahead of his confirmation hearing before the US Senate.

The PKR youth wing pointed out that the pro-Zionist’s extremist ideologies and divisive rhetoric were in stark contrast to Malaysian values of pluralism, tolerance, and humanitarian solidarity.

"As a sovereign nation, Malaysia reserves the right under Article 4 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to express reservations or reject any diplomatic appointment deemed inconsistent with its foreign policy or domestic sensitivities.

"Such a rejection should not be misconstrued as hostility, but rather seen as a necessary measure to safeguard the integrity of bilateral relations and ensure that diplomatic envoys can contribute constructively, in a manner aligned with the shared aspirations of both nations," PKR Youth's international relations bureau head Arief Izuadin said in a statement today.

PKR Youth plans to submit a formal memorandum of protest to the US embassy, urging the appointment of a "more moderate, respected, and globally-minded individual," he added.

Diplomatic disaster

Amanah also expressed its objection to Adams’ (above) nomination as he "might just further inflame the anger of Malaysians."

Its international bureau chairperson Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad Baharuddin Ismail Shah said amid the US' continued reluctance to restrain Israel's increasingly brutal campaign in Gaza, sending an inexperienced non-career diplomat with a controversial background risks diplomatic disaster.

"Perhaps the most important thing Malaysia has to be cautious about is our position as the Asean chair and the US' tendency to play up the China issue amongst Asean nations.

"Asean has its own approach and traditions in settling differences and disputes in this region which has so far maintained stability and peace in the region.

"The presence of an inexperienced and robust US ambassador with a controversial background in Malaysia, may unsettle the Asean region, as the US may pursue its own personal agenda against China in its global economic and political conflict with China," Raja Kamarul added.

Earlier, pro-Palestine organisations and the Malaysian Youth Council also argued against allowing Adams to become the US envoy to Malaysia over the threat to harmony and the country’s reputation.

On July 11, US President Donald Trump nominated Adams - an Australian-American influencer, author, and self-described “alpha male” - as the next US ambassador to Malaysia.

The 40-year-old would be replacing Edgard Kagan, a career diplomat who was nominated by former president Joe Biden in May 2023.

Adams is infamous for his posts promoting a personal image based on stereotypical symbols of masculinity, as well as making Islamophobic remarks.

He is also an avowed Zionist, with former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin sharing a post by Adams last year, in which the latter bragged about getting a waiter wearing a "free Palestine" pin fired.
