Petaling Jaya MCA Youth is protesting the Selangor government’s plan for four local authorities, including the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), claiming that it lacks transparency.

Describing it as detrimental to MBPJ, Petaling Jaya MCA Youth chief Andy Teoh Tuck Wah questioned the state government’s announcement regarding the Smart Parking System despite it not being finalised yet.

“In terms of revenue distribution (from parking), local authorities are the biggest losers.

“Now, local authorities get 90 percent of the parking charges. With the new restructuring, 40 percent goes back to local authorities and the rest to companies, as well as (10 percent to) the Selangor Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI).

“So this is reducing local authorities’ revenue. What are the implications?” he asked at a press conference in front of the MBPJ building today.

He urged the Selangor government to hold a dialogue with the local community before implementing the plan.

On July 15, Selangor executive councillor Ng Suee Lim said discussions were still ongoing regarding the plan, with a final agreement expected to be signed this August.

Ng explained that the new parking system involves a collaboration of three parties, namely the local authority, MBI subsidiary Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd – which will act as the system coordinator – and the concession company that will handle operations on the ground.

Apart from MBPJ, the other three local authorities involved in the plan are the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).

Following objections from a number of parties, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari previously said that the concerns raised would be considered.
