Public transport services, including KTM Berhad and Prasarana stations, will continue operating as usual tomorrow, despite an opposition-led rally scheduled in the capital, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Loke stressed that the government upholds the right to peaceful assembly - even for groups who are not aligned with the administration - and urged for democratic freedoms to be respected.

"We cannot return to an era where democracy was suppressed and even Parliament was shut down," said the DAP secretary general in a statement today.

He added that the government’s priority is to ensure that the weekend routines of many are not disrupted by the demonstration.

"Our public transport must continue functioning so that people can go about their weekend activities undisturbed," said the minister.

Transport subsidies

Loke also reminded commuters of the government's ongoing transport subsidies.

The MY50 pass, which offers unlimited monthly travel on RapidKL rail and bus services for RM50, is now renewable online via the Touch 'n Go eWallet app. The government subsidises RM100 of the actual RM150 cost for each pass.

Additionally, he highlighted the MyCity Pass, which allows for unlimited daily travel on LRT, MRT, BRT, Monorail, and Rapid Bus services at just RM6. A digital version of this pass is expected to be introduced by the end of the year.

“I encourage all rally participants tomorrow to take public transport to help minimise traffic congestion in the capital,” Loke added.

Earlier today, an unverified notice allegedly by KTMB has sparked speculation online.

The notice, which is also being widely circulated on WhatsApp, "announced" temporary closure of the Bank Negara and Kuala Lumpur stations from 9am to 5pm tomorrow.

In response to queries in the comments section of its official Facebook page, the page administrator clarified that “there has been no official notification from management at this time”.
