Muhyiddin urges M'sians to 'Turun', steer clear of provocation

Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin urged Malaysians to participate in the “Turun Anwar” rally slated for tomorrow.

Having said that, the former prime minister urged attendees to mind their conduct and abide by the law at all times.

“Do not engage in any provocation which would create public disorder.

“The right to assemble peacefully is protected by the Federal Constitution. No one can deny us that right.

“So, let’s protect and preserve this right to our best,” he said on Facebook today.

Yesterday, PN deputy chief Hamzah Zainudin claimed the rally tomorrow could attract up to a million participants.

He also presented his calculation to justify his estimate.

“If there are 1,000 issues, it means there are 1,000 groups of people who are unhappy with the issues.

“Let’s say each group has 1,000 people, then we have one million already,” he added.

Hurling brickbats at Anwar, Muhyiddin said the former had failed to alleviate the people’s suffering and added to their burden by slashing subsidies and expanding taxes.

The Pagoh MP also claimed that the government’s recent decision to slash RON95 price by six sen and the RM100 Rahmah Necessities Aid (Sara) were attempts to contain the anger of the masses.

“This is not the right measure to reduce the cost of living. What people want is for the government to review its decision to expand taxation and slash subsidies… but this was not done.

“Despite collecting revenue from the people, the amount being disbursed is scarce. It’s too late now (to contain public displeasure),” Muhyiddin added.

On July 21, Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar urged civil servants to stay away from the rally, as doing so would be inconsistent with the principle of “Loyalty to King and Country”, as enshrined in the Rukun Negara.

“They shouldn’t go. They are civil servants, (so) how can they join? Every day, every week, we recite the Loyalty to King and Country pledge. Have they forgotten? Be loyal to the king and the country,” he said.

Later, the Attorney-General’s Chambers reminded civil servants that their constitutional rights have legal boundaries, particularly when joining public rallies.

The agency said civil servants are subject to the Oath of Office as provided for in subregulation 20(3) of the Public Officers (Appointment, Promotion, and Termination of Service) Regulations 2012.

Yesterday, Public Service Department director-general Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said civil servants should remain apolitical at all times under Public Service Regulations (Conduct and Discipline) 1993.
