Nearly 40,000 consumer accounts in Johor Bahru and Skudai were affected after ammonia levels exceeding safe standards were detected.
The unsafe ammonia levels were found in the raw water source supplying the Sultan Ismail Water Treatment Plant in Skudai on Wednesday (July 23).
Ranhill SAJ chief executive officer Anuar Abdul Ghani called it a serious case of contamination that directly disrupted the clean water supply to residents.
“High concentrations of ammonia can pollute river water and make it unsafe for use. This not only harms the environment but also poses health risks to the public,” he said in a statement today.

Ranhill SAJ, the sole water operator in Johor, has since reduced the number of affected accounts to fewer than 1,000.
The company is also monitoring water quality by collecting samples from impacted areas and is working with relevant agencies to identify the source of contamination and implement immediate mitigation measures.
It also organised a solat sunat istisqa (prayer for rain) at the Skudai plant this morning, led by Johor Islamic Religious Department Takmir teacher Zunnurain Abdul Khohar.

The prayer was joined by company staff and local residents.
Ranhill SAJ called on all quarters, including communities and industries, to play an active role in protecting rivers and the environment to safeguard the long-term sustainability of clean water resources in Johor.
