FMM lauds Anwar's diplomatic role in Thailand-Cambodia conflict

The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM) commended Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on his successful mediation of the Thailand-Cambodia conflict.

"The strong intervention by Anwar underscores Malaysia’s growing role in shaping a more cohesive and stable Asean.

"This significant diplomatic breakthrough not only averted the escalation of a regional conflict but reaffirmed Asean’s capacity to act collectively in resolving complex geopolitical issues through dialogue and pragmatic leadership," FMM president Soh Thian Lai said in a statement today.

He added that this contributed to regional stability, boosting investor confidence.

He urged Asean to strengthen trade within the region through efforts that include mutual recognition of standards, harmonising digital customs platforms, and encouraging regulatory coherence.

This is because intra-Asean trade accounts for only 22 percent of total trade within the region, in comparison to trade within the European Union, which is at 60 percent, he explained.

Ceasefire agreement

Only July 28, Anwar announced a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which had seen rising tensions since May 28, following a deadly incident in the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.

The two neighbouring countries have a long-standing dispute over their 817km border, which remains partially unmarked.

The ceasefire agreement came after peace talks mediated by the prime minister in Putrajaya.

Anwar, as Asean chairperson, said the ceasefire is among the common understandings reached at the meeting attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

The US co-hosted the meeting, with China participating as an observer to support a peaceful resolution to the situation.
