M'sian military to facilitate Monday's Thai-Cambodian meeting in KL

The Malaysian Armed Forces will facilitate the General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting between Thailand and Cambodia to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 4 to 7.

The Malaysian Armed Forces’ Defence Intelligence and Strategic Communications Division, in a statement today, said that the upcoming GBC Meeting aims to resolve the border dispute between both countries as part of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysia on July 28.

“Malaysia is the neutral venue chosen mutually by Thailand and Cambodia for their GBC Meeting this time around.

“The terms of reference for the deployment of Defence Attaché as the interim team and the deployment of Asean Monitoring Group will be part of the GBC agenda,” it said.

The ceasefire, effective from midnight on July 28, was agreed to during a special meeting hosted by Malaysia, which brought both Southeast Asian neighbours to the negotiation table amid escalating tensions.

The meeting, brokered by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya, saw Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai jointly agree to the ceasefire following weeks of rising tensions.

The two countries have long-standing diplomatic friction over an 817km undemarcated stretch of their shared border.

Tensions escalated on May 28 when a skirmish near the disputed Preah Vihear area resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
