Police to reopen probe into Wan Ahmad Faris' death

PARLIAMENT | The police will reopen a probe into the death of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who died 12 years ago.

This is according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who touched on the case in his winding-up speech of the 13th Malaysia Plan at the Dewan Rakyat earlier today.

“Now the family of Faris has urged for a review on the case, so I want to inform here that yes, police will reopen the case.

“I have discussed with the Criminal Investigation Department director and asked him if there is anything that prevents us from having another look (into the case), and the police said there is no problem to reopen it as the investigation paper was complete,” he said.

The minister was responding to a question posed by Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar).

The decision came days after Wan Faris’ family reportedly urged authorities to reopen the probe into his death in December 2013.

Wan Faris, then a Form Four student, was found in the toilet of the Nurul Aman Science Tahfiz School hostel in Kok Lanas, Kelantan.

His body was discovered by a hostel warden after noticing a foul smell from the toilet. The post-mortem classified the case as a sudden death, with no criminal elements involved.

However, the Kota Bharu Coroners Court in June 2016 ruled that Wan Faris’ death was due to the actions of unidentified individuals and rejected the possibility of suicide.
