MACC proposes better CCTVs in lockups, livestream of graft trials

The MACC has proposed that detention facilities owned by enforcement agencies in the country be equipped with advanced CCTV systems to enhance transparency and integrity.

Its chief commissioner Azam Baki said he is aware that the CCTV systems currently used by several agencies are outdated and could potentially lead to allegations and problems.

“The existing CCTVs are outdated. Yes, there are CCTVs, I know, but there are many issues that have led to allegations, such as deaths, possible corruption issues, non-compliance, all (simply caused) by technical problems.

“So CCTV is important to me, and I recommend that the CCTV should not just be ordinary cameras.

“First, it should have an artificial intelligence system, and second, there must be a control centre - the CCTV should not be ‘stand-alone’ (not connected to a monitoring hub),” he said, according to Berita Harian.

During a special session with the media at the MACC headquarters today, Azam said a more comprehensive proposal paper on the matter will be presented to the government for further consideration.

In addition to detention monitoring, he also suggested that live broadcasts of corruption trial proceedings be considered to strengthen public confidence in the judicial process.

“One of the proposals is to allow live streaming of corruption trials so that the public can follow the proceedings. Right now, many issues arise when certain parties manipulate what happens in court through social media posts.

“For me, if this reform is approved, it would be a very good step, showing transparency on the part of the government,” he said.

Anti-graft themed movie

Meanwhile, Azam said that an anti-corruption-themed film may be produced, and three production companies have already expressed interest in making the film.

“We have met them and given some examples of our cases for adaptation, but I told them the actors in the film must be of the highest calibre,” he said.

Azam stressed that the storyline and plot of the film must be engaging while accurately conveying the anti-corruption message.

“I told the producers that they must be serious about producing this film. It must carry the correct anti-corruption message,” he said.
