School stabbing: Cops rule out bullying for now, probing 'heartbreak'

Police said no elements of bullying have been identified in the shocking case of a fatal stabbing at a secondary school in Bandar Utama, which left one student dead.

While the motive for the murder is still under investigation, there is no indication of bullying involved, Petaling Jaya district police chief Shamsudin Mamat was reported as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

He said that police have detained the suspect and confiscated two sharp weapons believed to have been used in the incident.

“They were both students at the school, so there’s a possibility that they knew one another, though they may not have been friends,” Shamsudin said in a press conference, adding that statements would be taken from teachers and friends of the victim.

“A teacher heard a scream and tried to get help, but the incident had already occurred,” he added.

The victim, a Form Four student, was fatally stabbed at the school earlier today.

According to Berita Harian, the incident occurred around 9.30am when the 14-year-old suspect allegedly brought a sharp object - believed to be a knife - to school before attacking his schoolmates.

Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect also stabbed other students during the incident.

Shamsudin said that the suspect would be remanded at the Petaling Jaya Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

Spurned advances?

The New Straits Times, meanwhile, reported Shamsudin confirming that police are also investigating the possibility that the boy’s romantic advances had allegedly been rejected by the victim.

“I cannot divulge much as we are still in the midst of investigating the case, including the actual motive for the attack.

“I will provide further updates once we have solid findings,” he reportedly said.

NST reported a student from the school claiming that the suspect became enraged after his confession was purportedly rejected by the victim.

“We were told that he confessed to her the night before and got mad when she didn’t feel the same way,” the student added.

The report stated that the chaos subsided only after the suspect’s elder brother and several teachers managed to overpower him and take away the knife.

This latest case came barely two weeks after another disturbing incident in Malacca, where four teenagers were arrested for allegedly raping a Form Three student in a classroom on Oct 2.

The students have since been expelled.

Police obtained a six-day remand order against the suspects on Oct 11. They are being investigated under Section 375B of the Penal Code for gang rape.

Two days earlier, Perikatan Nasional lawmakers urged authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the death of a Standard Four pupil who was found unconscious in a school toilet in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan, earlier this month and later pronounced dead.

PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said the probe must establish whether the boy was already dead when discovered.

“The investigation must also consider the possibility that the death resulted from a criminal act, namely, murder,” said Takiyuddin, who also questioned why the case was classified as bullying.

On Oct 3, Negeri Sembilan police chief Alzafny Ahmad said a post-mortem revealed the 10-year-old died from pressure applied to his neck, with no other injuries found.
