Trump dances during Malaysia's red carpet welcome

US President Donald Trump was seen dancing on the red carpet upon his arrival in Malaysia this morning.

A group of dancers were performing outside Kompleks Bunga Raya at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as part of the welcome prepared for Trump on his first official visit to the country.

Dressed in a blue suit with a red tie, Trump started moving to the music in front of the dancers shortly after descending from Air Force One.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was there to greet Trump, seemed delighted with the US president’s reaction.

The performers, clad in diverse traditional costumes, had prepared a dance to music featuring the kompang, a percussion instrument with a distinct sound that is often played at Malay weddings.

After that, Trump took a Jalur Gemilang from a member of the crowd and waved it along with a US flag.

Pushback over Trump’s visit

This comes despite heavy criticism of Trump's arrival for the Asean summit in Kuala Lumpur, with many condemning the US' complicity in the ongoing genocide of Palestine.

Several parties, including former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, have urged Anwar to rescind the latter's invitation for Trump to attend the Asean summit in light of this.

A rally was held this morning at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur to protest Trump's arrival in the country.

On Oct 21, Anwar said he will be speaking to Trump about the situation in Gaza, among other pressing issues.

Aside from Anwar, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and US Ambassador Edgard D Kagan were also part of the welcoming party.

Trump touched down in Sepang at around 10am, following a flight from Washington.

After spending about 10 to 15 minutes greeting the people, he and Anwar got into "The Beast", a heavily modified and armoured Cadillac limousine that is the US president's official car.

Bilateral meetings

The pair will be holding a bilateral meeting this afternoon at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, which is also the venue for the Asean summit.

Trump's trip to Malaysia is the first of his three stops in Asia - the other two countries being Japan and South Korea.

This marks the first visit from a US president in a decade, as the last occurred in 2015, during Barack Obama's tenure.

According to Bernama, Trump is expected to witness the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Accord, a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia to end decades of conflict over the countries' shared border.
