Namewee released on 13-day police bail

Controversial rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, was released today, on police bail.

In a statement today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the musician will be on bail for 13 days.

“For your information, following the referral of the investigation papers to the office of the deputy public prosecutor today, Namewee will be released on police bail from today, Nov 13, until 26, pending receipt of the deceased’s post-mortem report.

“The investigation papers will be referred back to the office of the Kuala Lumpur DPP, once the post-mortem report has been obtained,” Fadil said.

Namewee is a key figure in assisting the investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, as he was reportedly the last person seen with her before she was found dead in the bathtub of a Kuala Lumpur hotel room on Oct 22.

No leads

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar yesterday told Malaysiakini that as of now, there are no leads in the police investigation paper that could connect Namewee to the 33-year-old Hsieh's death.

Namewee surrendered himself to the police on Nov 5 and was subsequently remanded, with the remand period ending today. Police had earlier stated that they are also awaiting the results of Hsieh’s toxicology analysis, in addition to the post-mortem report.

The case, which was initially classified as a sudden death, is now being investigated as a murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“Instructions have been given for further investigation to be conducted.

“So far, there is no evidence that shows the suspect was involved in causing the influencer’s death.

“However, if there are any new findings, the AGC will take appropriate action,” he said.
