Safety and sustainability: Genting to charge road users

Genting Malaysia Berhad has confirmed plans to introduce charges for vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands, with implementation expected at a date to be announced later.

In a statement, the company said the new private road charge is needed to cover the steep and rising costs of maintaining the 24km mountain road and its surrounding slopes, which have been solely borne by the company since the 1960s.

“Privately built by Genting Malaysia on difficult and mountainous terrain, Jalan Genting Highlands provides safe access to Resorts World Genting as well as other mountainside destinations,” the statement read.

This followed social media speculation that Genting Malaysia is pushing through an earlier plan to set up toll booths along its private road - a proposal first reported in 2023.

Separately, Genting has also issued a travel advisory two days ago on its social media platforms regarding a temporary road diversion at KM14.7 of Jalan Genting Highlands (Upward Bound Road), effective Nov 12, 2025.

The company noted that heavy usage of the road over the years has caused extensive wear and tear, requiring constant maintenance to ensure road safety.

“On the ‘user pays’ principle, the private road charge is the most sustainable path to defray the cost of upkeep, repairs, maintenance, and other unforeseen incidents.

“This is to ensure the road continues to be safe for all users, and provide access to the entire Genting Highlands community, businesses, millions of tourists, and members of the public from all over the country.”

Genting emphasised that the initiative involves a private charge on a private road situated on private land.

The company said it has consistently taken responsibility for the road’s safety, employing 24-hour emergency response teams stationed at both mid-hill and hilltop locations.

“Working on mountainous terrain is challenging, hazardous, and expensive, but it is essential to ensure the safety of the road and slopes,” the company said.

Genting also highlighted the broader economic benefits of the route, describing Jalan Genting Highlands as a crucial infrastructure that has helped catalyse the local tourism industry, creating jobs and business opportunities, while contributing to the economies of Pahang and the nation.

“The existence of Jalan Genting Highlands has enabled other mountainside destinations outside of the Genting Malaysia group to emerge, contributing to a dynamic tourism industry,” the statement read.
