Flood chaos: Over 18,000 evacuated, landslides hit Klang Valley

About 18,769 people across eight states have been evacuated due to flash floods, according to the latest figures from the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal.

Kelantan is the worst affected, with 9,729 people from 3,573 families taking shelter at 40 temporary relief centres.

“The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) has also been deployed to Kelantan, which is the worst affected, and is prepared to move to other states to expedite rescue operations and emergency aid on the ground.

“The government has also deployed the Ihsan Madani squad to all affected areas to help manage the welfare of flood victims at nearly 100 temporary relief centres that have been opened across the seven states,” Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in a Facebook posting today.

In Selangor, a total of 2,784 victims have been placed at 21 relief centres across five districts.

As immediate assistance for those who have relocated to the relief centre, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the state will provide RM500 to each of the 750 affected families confirmed to be registered in the impacted districts.

Of the total number of victims, 221 are students sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination, which begins today.

In the Klang Valley, continuous heavy rain triggered four landslides, while flooding was reported in parts of Shah Alam, Klang, and Puncak Alam.

Flood warnings have also been issued for the Gombak, Petaling, and Hulu Langat districts.

Rising waters disrupted major routes, including the Kesas, NKVE, and Elite highways.

In Kuala Lumpur, four landslides were recorded yesterday. Fallen trees were also reported along Jalan Ang Seng 4 in Brickfields, Jalan Langgak Golf, Taman U Thant, and Jalan Kiara 5 in Desa Kiaramas.

Situation in other states

Perak has also seen significant disruption, with 2,953 victims from 930 families housed at 33 relief centres in seven districts.

Perlis is similarly affected, where 1,400 people from 462 families are seeking refuge at 13 relief centres across three districts.

Kedah reported 1,622 evacuees from 603 families placed at 14 relief centres in two districts, after flood operations began on Nov 22.

In Penang, three centres have been activated in two districts, providing shelter to 265 victims from 70 families.

Pahang and Terengganu are experiencing more localised impacts, with smaller numbers of displaced residents.

Pahang has opened two centres across two districts to accommodate 42 victims from 19 families since Nov 25, while Terengganu has one centre operating in a single district, sheltering eight people from four families.
