Selangor on high alert for flash floods, Sri Muda under daily watch

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department has published a list of four districts under daily observation for flash floods, including Sungai Besar, Bestari Jaya, Shah Alam and Bukit Jelutong.

This covers areas including Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam, where 14 people died in the devastating December 2021 floods.

Also covered are other areas of Seksyen 25 in Shah Alam and Padang Jawa, where two people died from electrocution during flash floods in April.

As of the time of writing, only one flood evacuation operation has taken place in the district of Sungai Besar in Sabak Bernam, where at least 60 people have been displaced and relocated to temporary shelters.

No deaths have been recorded so far.

Heavy rain has been pouring over the Klang Valley since last night, with weather reports showing ongoing downpour.

Around 7.35am today, the Meteorological Department also issued warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds expected over Selangor (Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang), Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, and Pahang (Bera).

Thunderstorms have been occurring nationwide due to the monsoon season transition.

Latest information from the Info Bencana portal of the Social Welfare Department showed at least 10,538 victims in seven states affected by flash floods.

Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis have been hardest hit. More than 8,000 flood victims are reportedly located in Kelantan.

Yesterday, the government coordinated efforts to evacuate at least 4,000 Malaysians stranded in Hat Yai, Thailand, due to severe flooding.
