DAP Youth fired back at Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh following his resignation from the Malacca state government to “fight DAP”, stating that he is aiming at the wrong target.

In a brief Facebook post, DAP Youth Chief Woo Kah Leong reminded the Merlimau assemblyperson that his “real enemy” was Perikatan Nasional, which decimated Umno in the last general election.

“Fight against DAP? When in fact, it was PN that stole your seats,” Woo (above) said, describing Akmal’s stance as obtuse.

However, Akmal’s move drew the opposite reaction from his PAS counterpart, who praised the decision and offered to team up against a common foe.

“We will fight DAP together!” said PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, referencing Liverpool Football Club’s iconic anthem “You’ll never walk alone”.

Afnan had previously welcomed Akmal’s calls for Malay-Muslim political parties to unite in defending the community’s interests. On Jan 3, at an Umno Youth special convention, Akmal also urged a revival of the Umno-PAS Muafakat Nasional pact.

Earlier today, Akmal announced his resignation from the Malacca government’s executive council at the Umno Youth assembly, pledging to wage war against DAP.

‘Cleanse, sanctify’ DAP

In a separate statement, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz applauded Akmal’s decision but questioned the integrity of other Umno leaders who remain in the unity government.

“What about the others? Have other Umno leaders within the unity government agreed to continue colluding with DAP?” he asked.

Describing the unity government as a failure, Tun Faisal highlighted how some Umno leaders willingly engage in efforts to “cleanse” and "sanctify" DAP.

“Akmal’s resignation alone will not be enough to erase the unity government’s deception, mistakes, and the betrayal of ‘Umdap’ leaders,” he stressed.

Akmal has long been at loggerheads with DAP over various issues. The latest flare-up came after DAP’s Puchong MP, Yeo Bee Yin, celebrated a court ruling rejecting former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s bid for house arrest.

The incident prompted Akmal to call for Umno’s exit from the government - a move that led DAP Youth to counter that he should instead quit the Malacca government.
