PARLIAMENT | AG-PP bill postponed; Hamzah says Anwar wants to vet international media
R_A_G: It is wrong for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to cherry pick benefit of the doubt when it comes to allegations from reputable news sources.
It is not as if such allegations came from some posting on the internet or Facebook.
A genuine reformist would have quashed suspicions over the already disreputable agency, MACC, and its continually controversial chief by allowing an investigation into “corporate mafia” allegations.
Now it's the chance to prove that everyone is wrong about MACC. No investigation means a lot of suspicion is proven correct. It is an open secret to all anyway.
BusinessFirst: Indeed. We are talking about a credible news agency, Bloomberg. Also, the people accused are the ones who are tasked to investigate.
Further, did anyone check and verify if the transfer of ownership took place and interview the "victims"? Justice needs to be served and also seen to be served.
KNSamy: When a reputable international agency puts up an investigative report about the main anti-corruption agency of our country, the simple step to take is to form an independent committee to investigate it thoroughly and ask the chief to go on garden leave immediately.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki should have been relieved of his position. Anwar seems to be on Azam’s side, as he may have his own reasons to defend him.
Warm Skies: Anwar and his cabinet have already agreed on a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on the Bloomberg claims, no more postponing or waffling.
Get it done now; do not expect any more support from your partners if you fail the people again.
And for goodness’ sake, Anwar, stop saying there's no basis; that is for the RCI to determine.
Bloomberg has named people, circumstances, details, so what, no basis still?
Your job is really at stake; stop this stupid waffling.
Justice for All 2026: Anwar said the authorities will only investigate news reports quoting sources if there is substance to the claims.
This sounds like a selective chicken-and-egg situation here, and it also depends on who you are.
If you're not in the good book or you've been a bad boy all this time, complaining and being vocal all the time on many national issues, then any complaints on this person, no matter how fluffy, will be fast-tracked and prioritised with all the resources allocated.
In hindsight, how to know whether or not there's substance to the claim if you keep on being evasive, defensive and giving ironclad support to whoever is mentioned in the claim?
GSVL: Why is DAP keeping quiet? Just leave the cabinet. My view is that the task force under the attorney-general is going to be a whitewash.
Azam will be exonerated and his contract extended in May for a record fourth time.
The task force is investigating the “shares” issue and not the corporate mafia allegation published by Bloomberg.
How can Anwar say there is no basis? The Bloomberg article had names and specific companies and instances.
Shouldn't the RCI be formed to investigate that?
The DAP should force an early general election. I think the voters are just fed up with Anwar and this so-called unity government. Let the people decide who they want.
Anwar has lost all credibility and is no longer fit to govern the country.
Hmmmmmmmm: In his reply to Klang MP V Ganabatirau, Anwar seems to imply that a probe is being carried out now and whether an RCI will be formed depends on the outcome of this probe.
Bloomberg is no ordinary news outlet, and their news carries weight all over the world.
We need to treat their claims with more seriousness.
GraySalmon8323: It took a Herculean task to get former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak behind bars, where he belongs.
It was the relentless foreign, a select few local media, a small number of very brave Malaysians and the much-disparaged ordinary rakyat that got that job done.
Anwar’s disregard for the ground sentiment is to its own peril - will this be his Waterloo as 1MDB was to Najib and Umno?
It feels eerily like a déjà vu for all of us except Anwar.
GP2025: With Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said, as the chair of the parliamentary special select committee (PSSC), which is filled by Pakatan Harapan reps, it’s doubtful that this bill will conform to the correct interpretation of the federal constitution for the simple reason that MPs have no idea what the constitution demands.
Only former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was smart enough to understand it and act accordingly, but those who didn’t understand it thought he was wrong.
They want to “undo” it now, and the MPs are going about it inconsistent with the constitution.
Where democratic governance, according to the constitution, is concerned, Mahathir was absolutely right.
The MPs need to learn from him.
