Mass resignations: Kangar PKR chief claims 'pro-Rafizi' leaders inactive since win

Kangar PKR chief Noor Amin Ahmad claimed today that the resignation of 15 division committee members, including his vice-chief, Nazman Omar, was due to dissatisfaction with the outcomes of last year's party election.

The Perlis PKR chief said all 15 individuals had resigned after being served with show-cause letters for failing to attend division meetings since being elected last May.

“The issue began from dissatisfaction during the party election when their faction’s candidate for division chief, Indera Kayangan assemblyperson Gan Ay Ling, lost.

“They submitted a protest to the party’s central election committee. However, the decision remained as the protest was found to be unfounded,” Amin (above) told Malaysiakini.

The last PKR election saw division and a central-level contest shaped by two factions led by the party’s deputy president candidates - Nurul Izzah Anwar and Rafizi Ramli - both with an informal “cai” or candidates list.

The division-level polls concluded in April last year saw split outcomes where a team leader - the candidate for division chief - lost, while almost everyone else on the team won.

This inadvertently led to scenarios in which a team leader won despite most of their team losing.

Amin further claimed today that his team members in the division-level election contest on average lost by 100 votes or less, while those aligned to Gan and won had allegedly relied on support of “newly registered members from out of Kangar and even Perlis”.

Amin claimed that all those who resigned have not been active in running the division.

“Even without their attendance at meetings, the party has continued to function.

“Some of those driving this group (who resigned) are individuals who claim to be pro-Rafizi,” he claimed.

Subsequently, he said he had appointed new members to replace his line-up in the Kangar division.

“All those appointed are individuals who have been committed to the party from the past until now, not new members.

“Since winning, I have conducted six meetings and one annual general meeting.

“This does not include other smaller meetings. These met the party’s quorum requirements, and dozens of programmes have been carried out since then,” Amin added.

In the last PKR election, the former Kangar MP obtained 1,295 votes to defeat Gan, who received 1,059 votes, from a total of 2,356 ballot papers issued.

Gan, a former Kangar PKR vice-chief and sole opposition representative in the Perlis state assembly, had also failed to challenge Amin in the 2022 party election.
