MB to continue leading 'minority govt', N Sembilan ruler decrees
N Sembilan Umno withdraws support for MB, Madani state govt may collapse
PN willing to cooperate with BN in N Sembilan
EmEmKay: Umno’s sudden withdrawal of support for Negeri Sembilan menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun and the state government clearly indicates that the party could be instigating or intensifying the current palace-linked crisis for its own political advantage, especially as reports are circulating that the 16th general election may be held within this year.
Instead of contributing to stability, Umno’s manoeuvre appears to be “pouring fuel on the fire” at a highly sensitive moment.
This political gambit risks dragging the palace into a deeper quagmire of constitutional and public legitimacy, with the state government’s continuity now in question.
This is particularly troubling given that “legal experts have already stated that the menteri besar’s statements and actions are in accordance with the Negeri Sembilan state constitution”.
In other words, the constitutional position of the menteri besar is on firm legal ground, and the present turmoil seems driven less by law than by political calculations.
If so, Umno’s withdrawal of support in Negeri Sembilan looks less like a principled stand and more like an attempt to reshape the political landscape ahead of a potential early general election.
The most responsible and democratic course of action is for Aminuddin to seek an immediate audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, to request a dissolution of the state assembly and the calling of snap elections.
This menteri besar and the assemblypersons from PKR and DAP have governed Negeri Sembilan in an exemplary manner, delivering stable administration and good governance.
Rather than allowing backroom deals and shifting party loyalties to determine the fate of the state, the mandate should be returned to the rakyat.
In a fresh election, we would not only renew our support for this leadership but also work to secure a stronger, even super-majority for PKR-DAP so that the government can function without being held hostage by unreliable partners.
The events in Negeri Sembilan have further confirmed that both BN and Perikatan Nasional are fundamentally untrustworthy as political allies.
Power games, sudden withdrawals of support, and attempts to engineer crises cannot be the basis for stable governance.
A dissolution of the state assembly and a clear, renewed mandate from the people is therefore the cleanest and most principled solution.
GP2025: What’s wrong with our leaders? Don’t know how to govern according to the Constitution and democratic practices. The ruler doesn’t decide what kind of government is formed, majority or minority.
The elected representatives make that decision in the legislative assembly because a government is formed with the majority support of the lawmakers.
That’s the process of a parliamentary democracy. Follow our form of government as spelt out in the Constitution. No need to consult the ruler. After the elected reps have sorted out the issue according to the Constitution, then inform and advise the ruler.
In this case, there was no need to consult the ruler because the government is intact.
Umno’s declaration does not cause the collapse of the govt because the speaker has yet to act on the letter from Umno to resolve this issue in the legislature.
Because the elected reps don’t know how to govern according to parliamentary democracy, you get the rulers involved when the constitution doesn’t assign them the role of governance.
The four Umno exco members should now be replaced by other state representatives from PKR or DAP.
This episode serves as a very good and important lesson to the Harapan coalition. Umno is just a fair-weather friend, can never be trusted and will pound on you at the slimmest opportunity they can find.
But Harapan should also be wary that BN may be bold enough to try the same trick in Perak and Pahang.
Cynical: This showed how shaky Harapan’s hold on the government is.
Umno has no qualms about pulling its support and working with PAS to gain power. If the 30 BN MPs withdraw their support, knowing that there are rebels in PKR, they might just move to topple the government.
So, for those who naively think that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been bending backwards to accommodate Umno, you can see the reason why now.
Just see how they sabotage the Urban Renewal Act (URA) amendments and proposed amendments to the Constitution to separate the roles of the attorney-general and the public prosecutor.
Mazhilamani: This backstabbing and betrayal culture already exists in the present government coalition. It is just a matter of timing for it to surface, either now or after the next general election.
Bigger things may happen if Umno succeeds in taking over the Negeri Sembilan state government.
As others keep saying, the betrayal will start with DAP. That rumour is racially inclined.
Outlier: Basically, Umno is using the palace dispute to make its move.
Umno was always going to be an unreliable and marriage-of-convenience partner to Harapan and was just biding its time to regroup. They must be feeling confident that they have recovered their voter base.
Mike 1979: Umno is in the government because of cooperation at the federal level and because their president is also a lame duck.
It is better to call for a snap election once the state customary or civil courts clarify the status of the undang decisions. BN is unreliable.
