Authorities acted against Hulu Langat Rohingya settlement before, says S'gor MB

The authorities have taken action against an illegal settlement of Rohingya refugees in Hulu Langat, including warnings, fines, and demolishing some of the community’s structures, said Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin’s refutation followed a viral video highlighting an allegedly illegal building in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau occupied by the Rohingya community.

“This is not the first time action has been taken against structures that were built without permission in the area,” said Amirudin in a Facebook post.

“Various measures have been undertaken by government agencies since 2016, including the issuance of warning notices, compounds, integrated operations, investigations, and enforcement actions by the Hulu Langat District and Land Office, Kajang Municipal Council, the Selangor Water Management Authority, police, and the Immigration Department.

“The measures include demolition exercises. The state government stresses that we will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate action in accordance with existing laws,” Amirudin said in a Facebook post.

The menteri besar also urged the public not to be misled by unverified accusations on social media and instead refer to official statements from authorities on the issue.

The Hulu Langat District and Land Office separately corroborated Amirudin’s statement, saying some structures in the area, which occupied land reserved for the main road, had been demolished in 2017 in joint operations with other enforcement authorities.

The office added that notices had been sent out to vacate the remaining structures and the land on which the buildings were situated.

It also issued Notices of Illegal Occupation under Section 425 of the National Land Code to the owners of the residential structures in 2017, 2020, 2021, and most recently on March 13, 2025.

“Concerning the multi-storey residential building in question, demolition action had been carried out in accordance with the applicable laws.

“The Hulu Langat District and Land Office and all other district enforcement agencies are committed to carrying out enforcement actions against encroachments on government land, based on the rule of law,” the office said.

A recent viral social media video spotlighted the issue, showing a multi-storey residential structure with corridor walkways covered by zinc roofing, brick walls that appeared unfinished, and suspicious water pipes and electrical wiring connections.

The matter was highlighted by radio presenter and actor Azad Jasmin, 50, better known as Pak Azad, who happened to pass through the area, sparking various reactions from netizens.
