State elections

• Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said the outcome of the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections will depend on each party’s own strength, preparation and capability, rather than whether the elections are held simultaneously or separately.

  He stressed that BN does not gain any inherent advantage over Pakatan Harapan or other parties based on the timing of the polls, adding that election success ultimately depends on securing the people’s mandate.

  Berita Harian reported him as saying that no discussion occurred during the dissolution of the Johor state legislative assembly about synchronising the state election with other states, and suggested that questions on timing should be directed to the Election Commission.

Orang Asli rights

• The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has denied confiscating any gazetted Orang Asli land, after a protest by Orang Asli tribe members outside the ministry yesterday.

  

  In a statement today, the ministry said it received a memorandum from the Malaysian Nature Preservation Society (Peka), Greenpeace Malaysia, and a coalition of Orang Asli NGOs regarding issues related to the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 (Act 134).

  The ministry expressed appreciation for the views and proposals put forward in the memorandum, and said it will carefully examine all matters raised in detail before taking any appropriate action.
