  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he has never seriously thought about his legacy when asked by Nikkei about how he wished history to remember him.

    “I can see this as a village boy who wants to do his best for the country, who loves the country dearly and wishes that he does his best,” he added during a recent interview in Japan.

    Meanwhile, Anwar also continued to brush off questions about snap federal elections, saying he is focused on making the country strong instead of polls.

  • The majority of Amanah’s candidates for the upcoming Johor state election will be fresh faces, including youth and women.

    Johor Amanah chief Aminohuda Hassan was quoted by Bernama as saying last night that only six or seven out of 19 candidates will be those who had previously contested in elections.

Refugees

  • Wading into the debate on Rohingya refugees in Malaysia, Bersama co-leader Rafizi Ramli said the community must be given access to education.

    He said even if public schools are not an option, the community should be allowed to run their own schools to educate their children and deter them from crime and other social ills.

    “So even if you have no humanity or compassion, it is for the sake of managing the direct consequence of the lack of education that we must at least allow it,” he said on his podcast last night.

    Rafizi also said Malaysia should develop its own refugee management system, so that the country can keep better tabs on the community and address issues holistically.

Economy

  • Petronas, through its Turkmenistan subsidiary, has signed a new gas exploration deal with the country, with a 100 percent participating interest in Offshore Blocks 19 and 20 in the Caspian Sea.

    The deal is part of a production sharing agreement with Turkmenistan, Bernama reported.

    Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim - who was at the signing in the Central Asian country - said the deal will help alleviate concerns over domestic gas supply shortages.
