Malacca DAP reps moved to opposition bloc, state Harapan chief still on govt bench

The seats of four Malacca DAP assemblypersons in the state assembly have been moved to the opposition bloc on the final day of the legislature sitting today.

They are now seated alongside Perikatan Nasional and independent elected representatives after announcing yesterday that they were withdrawing their support for the BN-led state government.

The four assemblypersons are Allex Seah (Harapan-Kesidang), Low Chee Leong (Harapan-Kota Laksamana), Leng Chau Yen (Harapan-Banda Hilir), and Kerk Chee Yee (Harapan-Ayer Keroh).

However, the sole Amanah assemblyperson, Adly Zahari (Harapan-Bukit Katil), who is also Malacca Pakatan Harapan chairperson, remains seated with the government bloc, separate from the four DAP representatives.

Assembly speaker Ibrahim Durum expressed hope that all elected representatives would participate in today’s sitting with discipline, decorum, and courtesy, while complying with house rules.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Malacca DAP to remain in the state government so that the focus can remain on development and the people’s welfare.

Malacca DAP announced its immediate withdrawal from the state government after the state assembly passed amendments to the State Constitution to allow for the appointment of nominated assemblypersons.

Malacca DAP chairperson Khoo Poay Tiong said the decision was in line with the party’s stand in opposing the bill, which it claimed was contrary to the principles of democracy and elections.
