Foreign policy

• The US State Department had summoned Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States to explain the nation’s policy of not recognising Israel, according to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan.

  Mohamad (above) said Shahrul Ikram Yaakob told the US State Department that Malaysia had a long-standing policy of not recognising Israel, Free Malaysia Today reported.

  The summons from US officials followed an investigation by Malaysian authorities against Israeli citizens with dual nationalities who had been working at tech start-up the Network School in Forest City, Johor.

Math Olympiad

• Malaysia achieved a historic milestone by finishing among the top 20 countries at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026) in Shanghai, China.

  Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said Malaysia finished 19th overall among 117 participating countries, surpassing its performance from the previous year, she said in a Facebook post last night.

  

  She said the Malaysian team achieved an impressive haul of one gold, three silvers, one bronze and one honourable mention, scoring 142 points overall, and improving on last year’s performance (139 points).

  Six students represented Malaysia at the prestigious event held from July 10 to 21, according to a post on the Olimpiad Matematik Malaysia Facebook page.
