Former DAP MP Charles Santiago has criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement that junta-led Myanmar agreed to “take back” 5,000 Rohingya refugees from Malaysia.
Pointing out that Myanmar remains mired in armed conflict and that the Rohingya continue to face persecution, Charles said the arrangement should be seen as a “moral failure”, not a “diplomatic achievement”, unless backed by credible guarantees of safety and dignity.

Former DAP MP for Klang, Charles Santiago He also warned that any forced return of refugees to persecution would violate the international principle of non-refoulement, which binds all states regardless of whether they are parties to the 1951 Refugee Convention.
“Refugees are not a political inconvenience to be negotiated away - they are human beings who fled unimaginable violence in search of safety.
“Malaysia should be remembered for protecting the vulnerable, not for sending them back to die on the frontlines,” Charles said on X today.
