• Singapore arrested a Malaysian who attempted to smuggle over S$361,000 (RM1.47 million) worth of drugs into the republic on Aug 1.

  In a statement yesterday, Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint found a box in the boot of the 22-year-old’s vehicle containing two blocks of substances.

  Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were then alerted, after which 8.646kg of cannabis and 1.569kg of methamphetamine were seized, with investigations into the case ongoing.

  According to the Straits Times, the ICA noted that the drugs could have potentially fed the addiction of about 2,132 abusers for a week.

  The case comes amid a spate of recent incidents featuring Malaysians, including a pilot, similarly risking the death penalty to transport various drugs abroad.

• A 24-year-old Thai footballer died after being struck by lightning during an FA Golok Cup match against Malaysia at the Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat yesterday afternoon.

  

  Sungai Golok police said the incident occurred during heavy rain at around 5pm local time, when lightning suddenly struck the middle of the pitch, leading to the death of Yala FC player Sofwan Awae.

  The incident also left more than nine individuals injured, including Malaysian player Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli, 22, Bernama reported.

  Police are investigating the incident.
