Ramkarpal hits back at PAS rep, says DAP consistently questioned Zahid's DNAA

DAP national legal bureau chairperson Ramkarpal Singh has hit back at a PAS delegate who accused the party of hypocrisy for calling on the attorney-general (AG) to review the decision to discontinue the 47 corruption charges against Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ramkarpal (above) said Pengkalan Kundor assemblyperson Mardhiyyah Johari was “clearly erroneous and ignorant” of DAP’s longstanding position on Zahid’s case involving funds from Yayasan Akalbudi, a foundation led by the BN chairperson.

“If Mardhiyyah had first checked the facts, it would have become clear that the DAP had raised serious concerns about Zahid’s case immediately after the High Court granted the DNAA order,” the Bukit Gelugor MP said in a statement today.

Ramkarpal said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had also issued a statement on Sept 5, 2023, calling on the AG to explain the decision.

At the time, Loke indicated the party's respect for judicial processes, but noted that Zahid’s case was a matter of significant public interest.

Ramkarpal added that he had also questioned the AGC’s decision on Jan 8 to drop the case despite the High Court finding that there was sufficient evidence against Zahid, warning that the lack of an explanation could further erode public confidence in the AGC.

Therefore, he said the latest calls by Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and DAP Youth to revisit the matter were consistent with the party’s position since 2023.

Recently, Rayer called for the AG to review the discontinuation of Zahid’s 47 corruption charges.

The call was supported by DAP Youth, which argued that the matter was closely tied to the country’s institutional reform agenda.

Will PAS speak up?

Meanwhile, Ramkarpal then turned the criticism on PAS, questioning whether the party would similarly scrutinise the decision.

“The question that arises now is whether PAS will do the same or refrain from doing so, now that Umno and PAS seem to enjoy a cosy relationship with each other,” he stated.

Last night, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the courts should be allowed to handle Zahid’s issue independently.

“There is no need for politics to interfere in matters before the court,” the Kubang Kerian MP said.
