The 'Save MCA campaign' organising committee from Selangor will arrange and coordinate more activities nationwide due to overwhelming response from party grassroots members.

The inaugural 'Save MCA campaign' kicked-off in Perak on April 6 and the dinner event was attended by more than 250 party supporters.

"I have received overwhelming number of phone calls mainly from silent grassroots leaders who wanted to join the campaign," Theng Book, head of the legal advisors of the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department, told a press conference last Saturday.

mca new cabinet member 180308 ong ka chuan Responding to the campaign, MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan last month advised members not to further damage the party’s image and called on them to air their views through the proper channels.

He was also reported to have said that those not happy with the incumbent leadership should instead contest in the party elections.

"It is not the time to make noise but resolve problems) in a peaceful manner," he said. Asked if disciplinary action would be taken against the organisers, he replied: "MCA hardly engaged in such actions as it preferred to give advice."

Focus is on the president

At Saturday’s press conference, Theng Book said the organisers of the ‘Save MCA campaign’ would not respond to views expressed by MCA leaders in government.

"These MCA leaders in government have benefitted (by being appointed to ministerial posts) despite the party’s worst electoral performance.

"We are focusing only on the party president ….(being fully responsible for the party’s performance)," he added.

MCA vice-president Donald Lim Siang Chai, in an interview with Malaysiakini on April 8, had refused to comment on Ong’s views against the campaign.

Meanwhile, Theng Book said two dinner events are in the pipeline - in Puchong, Selangor, on May 16 and Penang on May 30.
