Court to hear Najib’s bid to stay 1MDB sentence on Oct 14
The Kuala Lumpur High Court today fixed Oct 14 to hear former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s application for a stay of execution of his 15-year jail sentence and RM11.4 billion fine in the 1MDB case.
Judge Noor Ruwena Nurdin set the date during case management attended by Najib’s counsel, Shafee Abdullah, and deputy public prosecutor Mustaffa P Kunyalam.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today fixed Oct 14 to hear former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s application for a stay of execution of his 15-year jail sentence and RM11.4 billion fine in the 1MDB case.
Judge Noor Ruwena Nurdin set the date during case management attended by Najib’s counsel, Shafee Abdullah, and deputy public prosecutor Mustaffa P Kunyalam.
“The court fixed Oct 14 for the hearing since you have filed the certificate of urgency. File the written submissions any time before Oct 14,” she said.
Najib, 73, was present in court.

The High Court on Dec 26 last year sentenced Najib to 15 years’ imprisonment and fined him RM11.4 billion after convicting him on four charges of abusing his position and 21 money laundering charges involving 1MDB funds.
He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for each abuse of power charge, with the sentences running concurrently, and a collective fine of RM11.4 billion, in default of 40 years’ imprisonment.
For the money laundering charges, he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment on each count, also to run concurrently, with no additional fine.
The court ordered the 15-year term to run consecutively with Najib’s existing six-year sentence for misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International, which ends on Aug 23, 2028.
Najib filed a notice of appeal against the 1MDB conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal on Dec 29 last year, but did not initially seek a stay of execution.
Last Friday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his existing sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine.
Meanwhile, Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa was seen entering the court complex at about 9.52am with her two sons.
Asked when the RM50 million fine would be paid, she replied: “I don’t know.”

Could some belated poetic justice descend suddenly from above before the funds are found for this get-out?! (Secreted funds of course unable to be touched for the present moment.)
Does Najib regret paying this lawyer touted as the best UMNO lawyer? 9.5 million is a bigger than a lottery and Shafee didn’t make a single dent. Most of his ethics was outside the courts and the only thing inside the court, I remember was ‘ my dog ate my notes’ remark.
So where is Najib finding the money to pay Shafee if accounts frozen? Is Shafee working for free?
