Azmin: PN should look in the mirror before blaming ROS over deregistration threat

Bersatu today hit out at Perikatan Nasional’s top leadership for attacking the Registrar of Societies (ROS) after the regulator warned that the coalition could be deregistered.

This followed PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan’s statement yesterday accusing ROS of issuing the warning in bad faith (mala fide) to apply political pressure on the opposition coalition.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said PN should not belittle the authority by making baseless malicious accusations in an attempt “to gain political sympathy and cover up their failures”.

“The ROS has repeatedly reminded PN in writing that the organisation must conduct all its activities in accordance with the Societies Act 1966 and PN constitution,” he said in a statement.

Azmin said Bersatu lodged a written complaint with the ROS on Aug 11 over alleged breaches of PN’s constitution by its new leadership.

‘Veto power’

Among other things, the party complained that Bersatu was left out of a PN supreme council meeting on July 16 and raised issues concerning the party’s membership status in the coalition.

Azmin claimed that PN’s new leadership breached Clause 7.1 of its constitution by denying Bersatu’s right to attend, give its views, and vote at the supreme council meeting.

“Bersatu also lodged a complaint with the ROS regarding the existence of a ‘veto power’ that influenced decisions made by the PN supreme council.

“Individuals who do not hold positions in the supreme council have repeatedly issued statements that could be construed as threats and pressure to strip or remove Bersatu as a legitimate member party of PN.

“This practice is contrary to the powers vested in the PN presidential council under Clause 7A.1(c) of the coalition’s constitution,” he said.

Imminent deregistration

Yesterday, Takiyuddin (below) confirmed that PN received a notice from the ROS warning them of imminent deregistration and called it a politically motivated attack.

He said PN received the deregistration notice on Tuesday and the notice to cease activities using the coalition name on Wednesday.

Takiyuddin said PN will be taking legal action to defend the coalition and prevent deregistration.

The coalition has 30 days to respond to ROS.
