PM: Petronas finalises Canadian LNG project, paves way for over RM94b in private sector investment

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Petronas and its joint venture partners for successfully finalising the investment decision for Phase 2 of the Canadian LNG (liquefied natural gas) project in Kitimat, British Columbia.

This paves the way for CA$33 billion (RM94.8 billion) in private sector investment, he said.

“This expansion is set to make LNG Canada one of the largest LNG facilities in the world, while strengthening energy supplies to international markets.

“The national oil company’s ability to deliver large-scale energy projects with international partners also reflects confidence in Malaysia’s expertise and capabilities,” he said in a congratulatory post on X today.

Anwar also expressed his appreciation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for his support for Petronas.

“I look forward to meeting PM Carney and the Canadian delegation in the future to strengthen the bonds of friendship and expand Malaysia-Canada cooperation,” he said.

Last year, two indigenous leaders from British Columbia, Canada hand-delivered a complaint to Petronas in Kuala Lumpur over environmental, human rights, and financial risks about the LNG project.

In a response, Petronas said that it works with all parties, including indigenous communities, to ensure that its operations worldwide are safe following reports that a Canadian LNG project it is involved in has caused environmental and social harm.
