MCA presidential aspirant Ong Tee Keat today lodged a police report over a poison pen letter he claimed was aimed at damaging his reputation.

ong tee keat police report on poison pen letter 141008 03 The letter, which was discovered last week by Ong’s supporters, had accused him of having acquired real estate worth RM21 million in Selangor.

"I want the police to unravel this matter. I want the police to reveal the type of real estate they have accused me of having, the value of the real estate and the exact locations," he told a press conference after lodging the report at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters this morning

"I have no idea myself where this alleged real estate I supposedly own is located. Maybe those behind the letter can inform me where they are," Ong said sarcastically, adding that he has been too lenient in the past when faced with similar accusations.

Ong who is also the transport minister lambasted the letter as malicious and "an act that reflects a shallow political culture".

"This has become an unhealthy practice, a culture that is detrimental and serious enough to destroy any political parties or political figures," stressed Ong.

MCA will be holding its party polls this Saturday which will see Ong facing off with former vice-president Chua Jui Meng for the top post. Incumbent president Ong Ka Ting is not defending his position.

Media told to be careful

Ong, however, did not state if he thought that the poison letter came from his political rivals in the party but stressed on the need to curb such dangerous culture.

ong tee keat police report on poison pen letter 141008 02 "What I have to say is, I don’t want this historical party, a party that is 59 years old, to be destroyed by a small group of irresponsible people who are perhaps too engrossed in campaigning by defaming or making false allegations against any person," he said.

Ong also told the media to be careful when quoting him, saying that if the media quoted him wrongly, it was tantamount to defamation.

"Don’t forget that what is considered as libel if reproduced or quoted (wrongly) is also tantamount to defaming me."

The minister was, this morning, escorted by two of his bodyguards when he went to the police station to lodge the report. Also present were around 10 of his supporters.
