PAS-ruled Kelantan today denied it will allow discos, ruling out even the sex-segregated, modest-dressing version it was reported to have approved.

The party recently lifted a ban on rock music as part of a campaign to win broader appeal in the multi-ethnic country.

But its Local Government, Housing and Health chief Takiyuddin Hassan said that reports it would allow discos - as long as patrons did not drink, wear revealing clothes or dance with the opposite sex - were wide of the mark.

"The report has been taken out of context. What I said was that there would not be a problem to have dances at functions if they (dances) were to involve only men or only women," he told the state Bernama news agency.

"Likewise, husbands and wives, they can dance but there have to be certain rules," he added.

Kelantan is the only Malaysian state ruled by PAS.
