Malaysian industrial output rose 3.1 percent year-on-year in May due mainly to increases in the mining and electricity sectors, data showed Monday.

The output in May, as measured by the industrial production index (IPI), was up 4.3 percent from April, the statistics department said.

On an annual basis, the mining sector expanded 13.9 percent and electricity rose 6.8 percent while manufacturing increased marginally by 0.1 percent.

"The moderate increase in the manufacturing sector was driven by ... refined petroleum products and food and beverages products groups," it said in a statement.

Month-on-month, the mining sector was 5.2 percent higher while manufacturing expanded 3.9 percent and electricity 4.5 percent.

For the first five months of the year, the IPI rose 1.0 percent from a year earlier.
