Najib gets more prison time
Najib Abdul Razak has been convicted of abuse of power and money laundering in the 1MDB case.
The 72-year-old was sentenced to 15 years in jail and handed down a RM11.38 billion fine, which, if he fails to pay, will lead to another 10 years in prison.
Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that Najib had an unmistakable bond with purported 1MDB mastermind Jho Low.
He also ruled that the former premier was not a ‘bumpkin’ who didn’t know what was going on, while also ruling the Arab donor letters as forgeries.

Will Najib get charged again?
Najib’s conviction in the 1MDB case opens the window to the possibility that he may be charged again for another money laundering case.
In June, Najib was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) over three money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International.
The case had been pending since 2019 without any developments. The Attorney-General’s Chambers said it could not move forward because documents were tied up by the 1MDB trial.
While Najib will file an appeal, lawyer Samantha Chong said prosecutors can apply for the court to release related documents to be used in the second SRC International case.

Perlis crisis over?
The political crisis in Perlis may have reached an end, at least for now.
Bersatu state chief Abu Bakar Hamzah has been sworn in as menteri besar, with all state assemblypersons present.
However, this appears to have triggered anger in PAS, with PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari making veiled remarks about friends turning into foes.
