Thailand, Cambodia to step up cooperation to combat call centre scams

Thailand and Cambodia agreed to step up cooperation to combat the rise of call centre scams in the two countries.

Deputy Secretary-General to Thailand's Prime Minister and acting government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said Thailand and Cambodia agreed to set up a joint task force to coordinate and tackle call centre scams efficiently.

The call centre scams were among the issues discussed during the meeting between Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o-cha and visiting Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhonn at the Government House in Bangkok yesterday.

During the meeting, Anucha said Prayuth and Prak Sokhonn agreed to strengthen cooperation to achieve bilateral trade of US$15 billion (RM66.4 billion) by 2025.

Statistics showed trade between Thailand and Cambodia grew almost 23 percent and stood at US$9.8 billion (RM43.4 billion) in 2021.

Earlier, Prak Sokhonn also met Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai.

Strengthening bilateral ties

In a statement, Don said Thailand and Cambodia would move quickly on humanitarian demining in the remaining areas along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

“It will start with 10 pilot areas (identified),” he said.

Meanwhile, Don said the soft opening of the Thailand-Cambodia Friendship Bridge at Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province of Thailand and Poipet city in the Banteay Meancheay province of Cambodia is an important milestone of connectivity for the two countries.

“This will provide a smoother flow of goods and tourists between the two countries, as well as help bring more economic opportunities and development to nearby communities on both sides of the border,” he said.

Don said Prak Sokhonn’s visit is very timely and significant as the bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia have grown in all dimensions to their highest level.

“Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn and I just had a very fruitful discussion covering a wide range of bilateral issues and ways to further strengthen the ‘Partnership for Peace and Prosperity’ between Thailand and Cambodia, especially the means to render tangible benefits for the peoples of both countries,” he said.
