Although it would be timely for him to finally retire from active politics, MIC president S Samy Vellu will probably not do so. He will also probably die in office as giving up his seat of power would mean having to face the wrath of the Indian community that he has helped to rob all these years.

The power he currently wields by virtue of is position is a shield of sorts which protects him from being literally kicked in the derriere by angry community members. The wily codger also realises that the minute he lets go of his power, those who profess to be his loyalists would be the first ones to take aim at his ample posterior.

Going by this, it looks like Samy Vellu's not-so-chaste deeds over the years have robbed him of his golden years, as well as the opportunity to bask in the sun and enjoy his massive wealth.

He is also paying for his sins by having to run around the country like a canine with its tongue hanging out, as he tries to convince Indians to continue to support him. To beg to be wanted is the worst indignity that can befall any man and, sadly, this is the fate that has befallen the mighty Samy Vellu.

I am sure that as a doting grandfather, Samy Vellu yearns to spend time with his beautiful grandchildren, but, alas, providence dictates otherwise. Had he been an upright and principled leader, he would have been able to enjoy everything someone his age longs for.

In view of these factors, I urge members of the Indian community to exercise their goodwill and show their compassion by promising Samy Vellu that they will not collectively boot his back if he steps down.

Let's make it easy for Samy Vellu by not giving him a hard time if he agrees to step down as party president. Let's collectively assure him that the Indian community has forgiven him and will try to forget that he has robbed its members blind throughout his leadership.

Unless we are willing to do so, we may have to put up with this humbug of a leader for many, many more years to come. So, my dear fellow Indians, I implore all of you to find it in your hearts to forgive Samy Vellu and let him gently drift into oblivion.
