Whatever happened to the bio-tech initiative?
Stephen Yap Apr 16, 08 4:11pm
Back in 2004, when Pak Lah was sworn in as prime minister, I was all for him as he gave me the impression that here was a man who could make things happen. I was ecstatic when he started the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation and unveiled the National Biotechnology Policy.

In 2007, he announced the RM177 billion Northern Corridor covering the states of Penang, Perak, Kedah and Perlis. Not long after, we had the Eastern Economic Corridor and then the Iskandar Development Region.

Pak Lah's advisors made sure that all these announcements would make the PM feel he is doing something good. However, they forgot one thing - foreign investors are no idiots when it comes to big bucks.

My questions: -

1. What happened to the Biotech Initiative?

2. Was there a check and balance to see how successful the initiative has been?

3. How much were spent and what is the anticipated return?

4. Whom have we attracted?

My grievances:

We are in a time where electronics rules almost everything. Did you ever wonder why most of our traffic systems are still analog? As a result, when you are at a traffic junction and there are no cars on either side of the road, the red light in front of you doesn't turn green after a few seconds.

The Selangor state government spent lots of money for old technology when, in fact, we should be getting state-of-the-art products. Could someone check on the tender specs for traffic systems? I am sure there is something fishy going on there.

Lastly, my advice to those in Umno: Malaysia is a country of many resources, enough to make us a world leader. We speak multiple languages, which makes many a Malaysian well sought after internationally. Please do not run the country as though it belongs to only one party, it is for all.

We should accept the people's voice and work together to re-invent Malaysia. Umno as the main party should humble itself and provide guidance to their new partners in state governance instead of tongue-lashing and belittling them.

Let's move forward and help chart another chapter in Malaysian history as we face the coming years full of hope and prosperity.
