A police report has been filed against Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Ming for allegedly belittling Islam during a ceramah in the campaign for Tuesday's Bukit Gantang parliamentary by-election.

The report was filed by Malay Unity Action Front president Osman Abu Bakar at the Taiping district police headquarters this evening.

bukit gantang by election nga kor ming dap ceramah 310309 01 According to him, Nga - who is also the Taiping MP and Pantai Remis assemblyperson - made the disputed remarks during a ceramah in Changkat Jering two days ago, the contents of which were also published on AnwarIbrahimdotcom blog.

In his report, Osman accused the DAP leader of belittling Islam by reciting Quranic verses from the Surah Al-A' raf for campaign purposes.

Furthermore, he said the holy verses were recited improperly.

In view of this, Osman said he felt compelled to lodge a police report in his capacity as president of the Unity Front.

The activist was accompanied by some 15 supporters, some donning shirts bearing Barisan Nasional and Umno logos, to the police station.

'Apologise, and we'll forgive'

Meanwhile, the Unity Front's honourary secretary Hassan Hamzah called on Nga to apologise to all Muslims over the matter.

He said they are willing to forgive Nga if he extends an apology because "Islam is a religion which encourages unity."

bukit gantang parliamentary seat 090209 Apart from this, Hassan also urged Islamic bodies, like the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the National Fatwa Council - to clear the air on the fatwa (edict) concerning non-Muslims reciting Quranic verses.

Come April 7, Bukit Gantang will be the battleground for a duel between ousted Perak menteri besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin and BN's Ismail Saffian.

While the real contest is between the duo, independent candidate Kamarul Ramizu Idris will also be vying for an upset.

Observers have already labelled the by-election as a referendum on BN's political coup in February which resulted in Pakatan Rakyat losing its grip on the state government due to the defections of several of its representatives.

Newly-minted prime minister, Najib Abdul Razak, was credited with masterminding the takeover.
