Pakatan Rakyat Youth wings today submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak urging him to establish a royal commission as early as tomorrow to probe the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

About 20 representatives from PKR, PAS and DAP were present at the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya this to hand over the memorandum.

The memorandum was received by the prime minister's special officer.

DAP Youth chief Anthony Loke said it was important for an independent body like a royal commission to look into the circumstances surrounding Teoh's death.

He also said the commission must be set up immediately after a cabinet meeting takes place tomorrow.

"If the cabinet delays the setting up of such a commission until next week, it would show that the government has no commitment to settle this issue," he added.

PKR Youth secretary Zulfikar Ali and PAS deputy Youth chief Azman Sapawi were also present and pledged their support for the setting up of the royal commission.

Teoh, 30, was found dead on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam at about 1.30pm on Thursday. He was said to have plunged to his death from the 14th floor, which houses the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Selangor office.

Teoh, who was the political aide of Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah, was among four people called to the state MACC office for questioning in relation to a probe on 12 Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons.

'Police not qualified to investigate'

Loke said MACC and the police do not have the credibility and are not qualified to conduct investigations into Teoh's death.

According to him, it is a "perception problem" with the police, since their image has been tarnished by a number of custodial deaths.

"They (the police) can't even put their house in order, how can they investigate another government institution?... that is why a royal commission is the most appropriate mechanism," he said.

He added that the police is also under pressure due to numerous Barisan Nasional ministers and lawmakers calling for a royal commission.

"This means even BN ministers and leaders do not have 100 percent confidence in the police," he said.

Azman later said PAS leaders will also submit a memorandum to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) this Friday at 2pm in relation to Teoh's death.

"This is not about politics, this is not about religion. This is about seeking justice for someone who has lost his life," he added.
