The period of detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) may be reduced from 60 to 30 days, said Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

"This is among the proposed changes in the review of the ISA. Actually we had received many proposals.

NONE "Some had asked us to lengthen the period (of detention) while others wanted it to be shortened to 30 days. I hope we can table the proposed amendments this year," he told reporters today.

He was speaking to reporters after meeting representatives from the National Council for Islamic Affairs, the International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, the Peninsular Malaysia Malay Students Front and the Malaysian Youth Council.

Hishammuddin said he had yet to decide on the proposed period of detention as he had two more meetings on the ISA review and urged those who wanted to have their say to post their views on his Facebook.

He said the review would look into detainees' rights and treatment, the power of the minister, the perception whether the ISA was used for political mileage and detention without trial.
