Members of parliament need to debate competently with integrity and more thoughtfully to make Malaysia's parliament world class, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said they should also show decorum when debating besides showing greater responsibility in representing the people to ensure the nation's top legislature continued to remain relevant and effective.

"After over half a century, what is clear is that we can transform the parliamentary institution in our country to be on par with those of advanced nations like Britain.

"I believe MPs from both sides of the divide share this vision and mission," he said when launching the book 'Evolusi Parlimen dan Evolusi Speaker Parlimen Malaysia' at the banquet hall, Parliament House, today.

On the book which is authored by Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Muhyiddin said it would help people improve their knowledge on the history, function and role of parliament.

"I believe the book will not only serve as a source of reference but also a heritage for all Malaysians to cherish," he said.

The 219-page book published by Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka will be sold at RM30 a copy.

Among others it captures the history of Malaysia's parliament and the role played by the Speakers since Malaysia gained independence (in 1957).
