An incinerator project mentioned in the Kuala Lumpur Draft Structure Plan (KLSP) 2020 is causing distress to the Puchong No-Incinerator pro-tem committee which wants it to be taken out.

The committee is puzzled why the project is included in the draft released o­n March 10 when the government had already said last Nov 13 that it would relocate the controversial project that was initially slated for the area.

Page 11-7 of the plan mentions City Hall's plan to build a massive 1,500 tonne incinerator - considered the world's biggest of its kind - in Kampung Bohol, Puchong, to solve the problem of solid waste disposal.

Shocked and unhappy

In response, the committee's secretary Lim Hoon Joo submitted a total of 35 public objection forms from various organisations and residents committees, to the KLSP 2020 objection secretariat at City Hall this morning.

Lim said the project should not have been part of the draft plan since the cabinet had already decided to relocate it to Broga, near Semenyih, Selangor - which is currently facing stiff opposition from residents there.

"The relocation decision was obviously a final decision. The project should not have been there (in the draft plan). When we first saw the project in the draft plan, we are shocked and unhappy.

"The residents are wondering whether this a mistake or something else," said Lim.

Edward Lee, another committee member, said residents are worried that if the project remains in the draft plan, the incinerator project may be revived.

"We owe the 135,000 signatories (who supported the committee's campaign against the incinerator) an answer because they have given us their trust to ensure that Puchong is not involved in any incinerator project," he said.

Committee disbanded

The committee had disbanded after the government agreed to relocate the project, but was "resuscitated" following the latest development.

"Although the government's decision (to relocate the project) was final, we did not sleep (on the matter). o­nce we found out about its inclusion (in the latest KL draft plan) we had to get back together to ensure that the cabinet's decision is affirmed by the relevant authorities," Lim said.

Meanwhile, the City Hall officer who accepted the complaints assured Lim that they would be directed to the relevant departments and o­nce a meeting date is set, the residents would be contacted.
