Background information and United States intelligence investigation outcomes on two Malaysian detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre have been posted on whistleblower website WikiLeaks.

NONE The reports written in 2008 recommended extended detentions for Mohamad Nazir Lep (left) , 35 and Mohd Farik Amin, 36. This was part of a ‘dump’ of 779 secret files on detainees in the prison camp.

The first batch of the files was published on April 24 with the all the files expected to be up for public view within a month.

According to the report, Mohamad Nazir (who went by the alias ‘Bashir Lap’ and ‘Lilie’ among others) and Mohd Farik (also known as ‘Yazid Zubair’ alongside other aliases) have admitted to being members of al-Qaeda, and had links to the Southeast Asian militant organisation Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

Both were detained on suspicion of terrorism in 2003 - Mohamad Nazir was picked up in Thailand and Mohd Farik in Cambodia. They were transferred to Guantanamo on Sept 4, 2006.

US intelligence believes that they were part of a suicide plot involving the hijack of a commercial passenger airline in a second-wave attack after Sept 11, this time in Los Angeles.

The report names several others in the same ‘terrorist cell’ for the plot, including three former Internal Security Act detainees.

NONE According to the report produced by US Navy commanding rear admiral DM Thomas Jr, Mohamad Nazir admitted to have been recruited along with Mohd Farik (left) at a mosque in Kuala Lumpur after attending a talk by JI leader Riduan Isomuddin.

Mohamad Nazir was quoted as saying that the duo had met at an architecture firm in Kuala Lumpur where he was working as a draftsman. He later met Riduan in Bentong and agreed to be sent for combat training in Afghanistan.

Both are considered by US intelligence as “high value detainees” who can be “exploited further” for information on other potential terror plots.

Mohamad Nazir, however, is also deemed a ‘high threat detainee’ compared to Mohd Farik who has no disciplinary infractions against him. And both are considered high threats to society.

Mohamad Nazir was reported to have admitted to having dreams of martyring himself in action against the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and said to have thought it a good idea to attack international sporting events, as the only Muslims who attended those events are ‘non-pious ones’.

‘Bomb-making skills’

Both were reported to have bomb-making skills, with Ahmad Farik who has a diploma in electronic communications trained in the wiring of bombs.

Ahmad Farik was quoted to NONE have mentioned ties to Malaysian bomb-maker Azahari Husin, and admitted to know of Mohamad Nazir’s plans to blow up the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur using a truck bomb.

Mohamad Nazir, described as having been an active PAS member, is also reported to have had a role in the bombing of the JW Marriot hotel in Jakarta.

The Malaysian government had informed its US counterpart in 2009 of its desire to bring the duo back to face trial, following US president Barrack Obama’s promise that his administration intended to close Guantanamo Bay.

In March this year, Obama was reported to have reluctantly ordered the resumption of military trial of suspects of terrorism in Guantanamo Bay, after Congress’ vehement opposition to trying the detainees in federal civilian courts.
