There has not been any formal complaints on phantom voters, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz, dodging allegation by opposition parliamentarian Azmin Ali.

Azmin (PKR-Gombak), in a supplementary question asked the minister to explain the details of voters registered in his constituency using the example of voters allegedly registered in his mother’s house in Kampung Klang Gate Baru.

“Two days ago (the Election Commission deputy chairperson) Wan Ahmad Wan Omar challenged me to prove that the May’s electoral role is the dirtiest, so I took up his challenge and I produced the 2010 voters master list,” said Azmin.

“There are three main things... house number 1E, my mother’s house, who has been staying alone... but it says (in the master list) that there are 11 other people staying there... six of them Malays and five Chinese.

azmin pkr parliament 260408 Azmin said that in the village there are not any condominiums or apartments as it is listed as a “heritage village” but 48 non-Malays voters are said to live in an apartment there.

“There were some voters who were registered with the address of Block 22, Level 14, Unit 5. But in fact, Kampung Klang Gate is a traditional Malay village without modern buildings,” he said.

“This one locality has almost 100 phantom voters... what about other localities?  Gombak has 43 localities that means it has around 4,300 phantom voters? I have taken up Wan Ahmad’s challenge and I have proven this so how can we be assured that elections can be fair and clean?” asked Azmin.

Responding to this, Nazri simply said that it is difficult to take Azmin’s grouses, during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, seriously as  “no formal complaint” has been made.

‘Phantom voters registration could be your doing’

Diverting attention from the matter, Nazri took a swipe at Azmin, who has just returned to Parliament last Thursday after a six-month suspension last December.

“The 11 people (in you mother's house) could be your own doing,” he joked, adding that Azmin was in high spirits in bringing up he matter after a brief “holiday”, referring to the latter's suspension.

NONE Coming back to the question, however, Nazri ( right ) just said: “We will try our best to look into the matter.”

Nazri hinted that Azmin might have only raised his concerns in “coffee shops or ceramahs” but has yet to make a formal complaint to the EC.

“Ah, now I will bring the matter up to the EC. (I will tell them) the Gombak MP, who has just return from his holiday, has brought the matter up in the House,” added Nazri sarcastically.

Prior to this, Nazri, in reply to Nur Jazlan Mohamed (BN-Pulai), on the number of immigrants registered as voters using invalid identification cards, said that there were no such cases as there was a difference between “trying to register them and registering them successfully”.

“This is because the screening and checking that is conducted by ALIS (Agency Link-Up System) does not only reject those who are not citizens but also to reject applications for those who are not of age and using false identifications,” said Nazri.

Nazri gave an assurance that action will be taken against those who are found to try registering illegal voters.

The Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) 2.0, which comprises of over 60 NGOs and oppositions political parties, is planning a mega rally on July 9 to press for electoral reform.

The organisers aim the event to be even bigger than its rally in November 2007, which saw 40,000 protesters in the streets of Kuala Lumpur in yellow T-shirts demanding changes to the electoral system that critics say is favouring the ruling party.
